back it up

Lesson Learnedlast tuesday was a day like any other day really; until about 4 o'clock. my work computer completely froze. i had to force quit and restart. not earth shattering by any means until i restarted and i couldn't get my iPod to mount. i restarted again. still wouldn't mount. i tried hooking it up to my new laptop. nothing. i borrowed a different USB cable from a co-worker. i tried a PC. i tried another mac. still nothing...

...you might be wondering, "why is it so important for you to get your iPod to mount?" well, all of my SweetBeaker files are on it. i repeat, ALL of my files...and, no i didn't have them backed up. i know, i know...

(i can give you lots of reasons why my files weren't backed up but we'll still come back to the fact that they weren't.)

so, by this point, i was becoming quite fretful. i called the genius bar. they tried helping over the phone. nothing we tried worked so they recommended an appointment. i went the next morning and, as it turns out, there was really, really nothing they could do except recommend a file recovery service and make it clear that these services can be quite pricey.

my heart sunk.

i came to the realization how big of a loss this really was. it was ginormous. bigger than the big picture. it was overwhelming. do i really have to start from square one again? how does one do it? maybe it won't be so bad and i can just redesign everything much better than what it was before? should i try recovery even though it can potentially break the bank? my mind was in overdrive and i was overloaded.

in the end i opted for and found a great recovery team; there was just too much to lose and i couldn't not try. the recovery team had my iPod for two days before calling with the most earth shattering, best news ever - the recovery was a success. even better, it would only cost $40.

i truly lucked out. not everyone does. please back up your files. NOW.

has this ever happened to any of you, dear readers? how did it happen? what was the outcome? it's amazing how technology dependent we've all become, isn't it?

the worst thing i've yet had happen was pretty horrible and teaches a second lesson.

in april of 2004, my house was burglarized. since i was a phd student at the time, my whole world was on my computer -- papers, research, etc.

add to that all the music my hubby and i owned (i guess he was still my fiance back then) and all of our photographs. well, because of the school stuff i was pretty good about backing up.

except that when my computer was stolen, the backup DVD was in the computer. and it was also stolen. and i cried and cried and cried.

now i back up to an external hard drive that i keep hidden in the house well away from the computer and anything extremely important i also upload to a remote server somewhere (like my web server or my email server) and burn to DVD and put someplace else. i burn all of our music and photos periodically since the burglary and put the DVDs in our safe deposit box.

i know. i'm totally freakish about it now.

although i still don't do it as often as i should with all of my design files and all. i create so many new files so often i really ought to back up more often.

note to self...

wow, julie. i don't know what to say. i really lucked out this time around and i can't imagine everything, photos too, to be completely gone. files you can rebuild. photos you cannot.

i really appreciate that you took the time to share. second lesson for sure - no matter what, back up. back up everything. ALL. THE. TIME.
